‘Moonmilk – I Am Here! — Part One’, touches on a primordial impression of being human; of being present. Taking inspiration from early cave drawings – offering a modern perspective of personal identity and marking territory. “I am here” is a loaded declaration touching on the fragilities and complexities of being human, and also alludes to wider social issues such as displacement and people in need. This work introduces the expansion of my drawing with amalgamating video as an integral element.
It draws inspiration from early cave drawings and the technique of ‘fluting,’ where marks are made with fingers on soft surfaces. This technique often involved using moonmilk, a creamy white substance found in limestone and dolomite caves. Moonmilk, once believed to be a divine gift, is actually a natural precipitate of fine crystal aggregates like calcite and aragonite.
The video was selected and exhibited for the prestigious Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2024.
